This piece is a variation on a design popularized by Robert Chapman and others. Classified
by woodturners as a "box", it is a segmented, hollow sphere made of maple on a stand.
The lid, which is also segmented, is made of maple with an (African) ebony finial. The sphere also has a bottom finial also made of ebony (African). The base is made of ebonized walnut. The piece stands 12 inches high and is a little over 4 inches in diameter, excluding the top and bottom finials. It is finished with multiple coats of Waterlox. |
